"True Blood star Sam Trammell has confessed he doesn't believe in the supernatural. But the 38-year-old actor, who plays bar owner Sam Merlotte in the hit vampire drama, admits it's fun to be a part of the spooky show. Sam said: "Well, I'm not really one who believes in ghosts, I mean, I don't have a whole lot of supernatural bent in me, no, but it's fun to be part of it." He went on: "I love the fantasy and the imagination and the world of it, I mean I love it. It's so much more fun than just doing a by-the-book series and playing a lawyer or doctor or fireman." Sam may have a supernatural element to his character - who sporadically turns into a dog - but the actor prefers to focus on the other sides to him. He said: "I really like that he is damaged person, I came from a very normal American family which is great, I don't want to put it down, but Sam's parents abandoned him when he was 14 because he turned into a dog and that is a real scar on him. "It's interesting to play someone like that, who has had to fend for themselves on streets and who didn't have parents and who knows how he found the money to buy the bar? That to me is the most interesting thing about Sam. More than the fact that he's a shapeshifter, just the fact that he had a difficult childhood." Metro Uk got a nice long interview with Sam Trammel (Sam Merlotte) He talks about his southern family and the perks that come with now being a recognized face on tv.
Have you been surprised by the success of the show?Really surprised. I thought it would do well but it’s really taken off with the second season. During the first year the audience grew every week through word of mouth. I’m blown away by that. This is the biggest role you’ve had. What effect has that had on you?I get recognised every day. It’s exciting – I’m not going to pretend I’m bored by it. I got a round of drinks bought for me last night in a bar, that was nice. I’m also getting more offers for work, too. You’ve done lots of stage work in New York. Will doing a vampire show ruin your credentials as a serious actor?I hope not. It’s a quality show. I could have been on a show that was as popular but not as well written – there are plenty of those – but this has a good pedigree. It won’t hurt me in New York – they love anyone who is popular. Have you got any crazy fans? There are varying degrees of vampire fans. I met a woman who shaved her teeth to look like fangs. That’s commitment. Did you have a teenage interest in the occult?I went through a phase of reading a lot of Stephen King but I was never a vampire person. I grew up in a rural community and the local cemetery was in our front yard but nothing supernatural ever happened. They must have been pretty chilled out ghosts. I went to university in Paris and lived in a really old apartment which I’m sure was haunted. Things moved around inexplicably. There are varying degrees of vampire fans. I met a woman who shaved her teeth to look like fangs. That’s commitment You’re from Louisiana. Does that help with the southern accent?I grew up in West Virginia and Louisiana. I have the sound of my grandparents’ and cousins’ accents in my ear. I lost mine but it comes naturally to me. Read more here... True Blood's Sam Trammell has made a plea to the show's writers for his character to suffer more abuse. The 38-year-old actor, who plays shapeshifting bar owner Sam Merlotte on the HBO series, told Digital Spy that he enjoys the trouble his alter ego gets himself in. "I had a really good one the first season with the connection to Maryanne and the money, and this past year with my parents - I enjoy being in trouble," he said. "I enjoy the conflict. "In a way Sam's the sensible eye in the crazy storm of the show. Any kind of bad situation I could be in - I like the bad situations." He added: "Sam in more trouble - more abuse for Sam, that's what I wish for!" True Blood returns for its third season in 2010 on HBO in the US.
